About Kazuha:
Kazuha Hitachiin is a minor character from my all-time favorite manga, Ouran High School Host Club. The grandmother to host club members, and twins, Hikaru & Kaoru Hitachiin, Kazuha fascinates me because she's a much older Japanese woman, from a well-to-do family who unapologetically does what she wants, while also maintaining a stringent sense of discipline and responsibility. She's a practitioner of ikebana, rides a motorcycle for pleasure, and wears a floral hairstyle fashioned after the time her then-toddler grandsons just stuck a bunch of flowers throughout her hair. She takes shit from nobody, and even her kindness can be delivered in amusingly prickly words. The family name, Hitachiin, stems from the women, not the men of the family.
While I love the fact that she's unconventional and interesting, what I love the most about her is that she has always been these things at a time and place where women were meant to be traditional and submissive above most other things.
I address my blog as a greeting to her both for my amusement, and as a reminder that age is more than a concept, and isn't simply a number. There are so many nuances and assumptions that come with a person's age, and while in terms of health some of these expectations can be true, they are not always so. And in pertaining to professional and societal roles, I feel so long as we don't allow ourselves to stop engaging or learning, that aging should be met with curiosity and joy.
And so, Hello Kazuha.
